Showing here what I did to my PVC overflow. I got sick of snails crawling in there and having to take the thing apart each time to get them out as the suction would be too great for them to get out on their own. I tried the PVC end cap with holes, but it impeded my suction too much (to the point that the return was going faster than the overflow), so I want back to my original idea. I got the black piece from lowes from their fountain return pumps section for about 2 bucks. It is meant to guard the impellar on a pond pump from sucking in rocks or other debris, but it fit perfectly on the end of a 1-inch PVC. I really should go and paint the thing, but I was again, too lazy, impatient, and cranky that I had to take apart the tubing due to the snail. Oh well, it is rapidly growing coraline (and of course I was stupid and put all the parts that had coraline on the on backwards so they are now facing the back of the tank... clever!). Soon enough it will all be a nice pink/purple, so I don't really mind.
